Simultaneously, He bestowed upon them a new commandment, which would establish a community distinctly separate from that of the world, specifically that they should love one another. However, Peter was unhappy with this and expressed a desire to accompany the Lord. When this zealous disciple confidently proclaimed that nothing could hinder him from following his Master and that he would even ‘lay down his life for Him,’ the Savior rebuked his overconfidence by foretelling that before the rooster crowed, he would deny Him three times. After vividly illustrating the impending trials He would face, the Savior warned His disciples that they would all abandon Him that very night and would be scattered. The apostles are referred to as sheep, being representatives of goodwill. The Lord referenced this ancient prophecy so that the disciples would not misconstrue His words as a blame directed towards them. To provide reassurance, He quickly conveyed the joyous message: following My resurrection, I will meet you in Galilee, which is the site of one of His post-resurrection appearances (Matthew 28:16)."},{"author-name":"Innocentius of Kherson","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88d18072d36d1a976dd2c_Innocentius%20of%20Kherson.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Before arriving at Gethsemane, the Lord felt it important to remind the disciples once more about the impending trials they would face (Matthew 26:31). He asked them, \\"When I sent you to preach without provisions, without extra clothing, or shoes, did you lack anything?\\" The disciples replied, \\"Not at all.\\" The Lord then proceeded gently, so as not to alarm them excessively, saying, \\"But now, let the one who has a cloak bring it, and likewise, if one lacks, let him sell his outer garment and acquire a weapon. For I tell you, it is essential that the Scripture must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors.'\\" This teaching from the Master revealed that the disciples would now need to rely on themselves for a time, necessitating that they take care of their own well-being and security. However, some misunderstand the Master’s instruction as an exhortation to arm themselves for potential threats. In this context, one disciple mentioned they had two swords. The Lord's response didn’t reflect their misunderstanding, for He had a different intention; however, it was reasonable for the disciples, who, amid the coming turmoil, would soon be scattered in the rugged terrain of Jerusalem. Thus, as a gesture of acknowledgment, He said, \\"It is sufficient\\" (Luke 22:35-38). He further added, instead of providing clarification or examples, \\"All of you will be tempted to abandon Me this night; for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. But after I rise again, I will go before you into Galilee.'\\" “Even if everyone else is tempted to forsake You, I,” Peter declared, neglecting the Master’s previous warning out of his deep affection, “I will never deny You!” “Truly, I say to you,” Jesus replied, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” “Even if I must die with You, I will never deny You,” Peter insisted, unable to envision such a betrayal. This sentiment was echoed by all the other disciples as well (Matthew 26:31-35)."}]}
