Those who are uncertain should reflect on all that has been stated, and upon discovering the truth in all things (which he surely will), let him have faith in what has transpired as well as what is to come; let him engage with all matters thoughtfully, and he will realize that subsequent occurrences have confirmed the validity of the prophecy. Christ mentions the elements to illustrate that the church surpasses both heaven and earth, and to affirm that He is the Creator of all. Given His reference to the end times, which many find hard to accept, He invokes the heavens and the earth, thereby demonstrating His unfathomable power and establishing His authority as the ruler of the universe; thus, to those who question His words, He offers them as fully reliable."},{"author-name":"Jerome of Stridon","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88dcd3432c6dd41375498_Jerome%20of%20Stridon.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"The heavens and the earth undergo transformation rather than annihilation; otherwise, how could the sun lose its brightness, the moon cease to shine, and the stars tumble from the skies if there is no heaven and earth for the celestial bodies to illuminate?"},{"author-name":"Anonymous Commentary (Opus Imperfectum)","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":4,"exegesis-text":"Uncertainty often leads individuals to adopt a carefree attitude. When people are aware that something is certainly going to happen to them, they tend to make serious preparations. To prevent the apostles, who were grappling with doubt concerning His return, from falling into negligence, Jesus fortified His teachings with a solemn declaration: \\"Truly I say to you, this generation shall not pass away, as all these things shall be.\\" In times of significant peril, extensive preparation is essential, and such readiness demands thorough guidance and admonition. It should be noted that Christ did not aim to suggest to His followers that the impending judgment was already underway, but rather that it was to occur in the future. He spoke not only to those alive at that moment but to humanity as a whole. This group encompasses those who face trials and those who inflict them: the sinners within mankind and the dark forces that influence them. Both will remain until the end of time, for as Christ declared, \\"Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels\\" (Matt. 25:41). Therefore, it is essential that the source of temptation persists as long as there is faith in need of testing. However, it is possible that this generation signifies those mortal Christians who will transition into eternal life only after all that Christ has foretold has taken place. \\"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away,\\" for heaven and earth were fashioned to serve you, whereas my words were created to govern you. Both heaven and earth are subject to futility, as the apostle states: \\"The creature is subject to vanity\\" (Romans 8:20). Yet, truth, by its very nature, cannot be deceived and is imperishable."},{"author-name":"Euthymios Zigabenos","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":11,"exegesis-text":"In affirming the unchangeability of what has been declared, he emphasizes that these firm and steadfast entities would cease to exist before the words I have spoken in response to your inquiries fail to come to fruition. Those celestial and terrestrial realms, seemingly steadfast and unyielding, will be brought to ruin sooner than My words can fade away (St John Chrysostom). The profound divine authority present in the words of the Lord Jesus was unmistakable. Each listener understood that they were receiving more than a mere warning; indeed, heaven and earth stood ready to yield their positions to the fulfillment of His promises (Archbishop Innocent of Kherson). “Whoever questions this should reflect on all that has been proclaimed and observe,” St. Chrysostom asserts, “that subsequent occurrences have undeniably validated the truth of this prophecy. By referencing these elements, Jesus Christ aimed to illustrate that the Church holds a greater significance than heaven and earth, and to affirm His role as the Creator of everything that exists, the Sovereign of the universe.”"},{"author-name":"Michail (Lusin)","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c89550c567e172d15b3055_Michail%20(Lusin).png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Heaven and earth will fade away: this asserts the unchanging nature of the prophecy declared (see note on Matt. 5:18). Consider the fig tree: when its branches soften and its leaves start to sprout, you can recognize from these familiar indicators that summer is approaching. Similarly, in relation to what I am sharing with you, when you observe the occurrences I have predicted unfolding, you will realize that judgment is imminent, already at the threshold for the people of Israel. Truly, I assure you, it will soon come to pass that many who are currently alive will bear witness to all these calamities and will experience them firsthand; every word will occur as I declare, for it is more likely for heaven and earth to perish than for my words to go unfulfilled. Jesus’ statements concerning the fig tree affirm that all He proclaimed will indeed take place while the generation alive at that time remains, and this will undoubtedly happen. The Evangelists Matthew, Mark, and Luke have positioned these significant words in their narratives, where the conclusion of the age is referenced. These statements, however, cannot pertain to the end of the world and were certainly directed towards the imminent destruction of Jerusalem. Thus, they are included here following the twenty-third verse of Mark’s Gospel to maintain the flow of the narrative."},{"author-name":"Paul Matwejewski","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8969f5be0d592d5a10576_Paul%20Matwejewski.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"All who listened to these words sensed that they were uttered by the Sovereign who governs the destinies of the universe, in whose voice no proclamation will falter (Luke 1:37). Until this point, the Lord has addressed the latter part of their question. Moving forward, He begins to respond regarding the timing of the foretold events. He first teaches them that they will recognize the imminent end by the signs to come, similar to how they know summer is approaching when the branches of the fig tree become soft and lush. He also specifies the moment when His prophetic words will be actualized: \\"This generation shall not pass away, saith He, until all these things be fulfilled.\\" This expresses the onset of their realization, which indeed occurred, as the destruction of Jerusalem took place forty years later in 70 AD. Furthermore, the Lord emphasizes the steadfastness of His proclamation by stating that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words shall remain unwavering. After outlining the general beginning of the fulfillment of His prophecies, the Lord continues with the reminder: \\"But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven nor the Son, but my Father alone.\\" Mankind will be caught off guard on that final day, much like the flood suddenly seized those living in Noah's time, or when an enemy ambushes unexpectedly, as illustrated by the scenario in which one laborer is taken and another is left behind."},{"author-name":"Alexander Gorsky","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8884037c1e1c51e1332e2_Alexander%20Gorsky.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"The signs indicating the arrival of various epochs are evident in the events themselves. Just as we can observe the soft branches and budding leaves of a fig tree to infer that summer is approaching, we can discern the nearness of different ages through these specific signs. Regarding Jerusalem, the Lord has made it abundantly clear that this generation will not pass away until everything stated about Jerusalem is fulfilled. My words hold more permanence than heaven and earth. However, the exact day and hour of these events remains unknown."}]}
