Why should Christ’s return occur in the wilderness? Does He prefer isolation over communion with humanity? Is He so apprehensive of people that He requires the refuge of the wilderness? If He did not shy away from kings or judges during His Passion, openly proclaiming the truth to the wicked, how could He suddenly be afraid when He comes to judge the unrighteous? Therefore, if anyone tells you, 'Look, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out; 'Look, He is in secret places,' do not believe it. You would offend His Divinity by searching in hidden places for Him who encompasses all Heaven and earth; or by thinking that He, who came to bring low the proud and lift up the humble, is in hiding. In His first coming, His divine nature was concealed within a body to test the faith of believers. When He returns, He will manifest in glory to reward their faithfulness. Thus, during His first appearance, it was essential to seek Him; now, faith does not require seeking, for He Himself will seek out those who have believed in Him. The last days must be understood spiritually. There are two forms of heresy: some disguise their falsehoods by attempting to anchor themselves in the divine authority of Scripture, while others do not even attempt this and are in stark contradiction to the Word. The wilderness represents heresies that entirely disregard Scripture in their teachings; the hidden chambers represent heresies that incorporate snippets of Scripture, presenting a façade of truth."},{"author-name":"Ambrose of Milan","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88871ceef8c96e0998cd0_Ambrose%20of%20Milan.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"False prophets will emerge, proclaiming that Christ is in the wilderness and misleading individuals with their proclamations. St. John Chrysostom clarifies that after addressing the prophecy concerning Jerusalem, Christ turns His attention to His return, sharing with His disciples signs that are not only relevant to them but also to us and all future generations. The Lord continues His revelation of what lies ahead, warning, \\"if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will arise, performing great signs and wonders to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones. Therefore, be on guard; I have foretold you everything.\\" According to the interpretation of this same holy father, the warning pertains not to the immediate aftermath but to the period right before the end of the world, effectively skipping the entire span from the fall of Jerusalem to the onset of the end times. Christ cautions that if they claim, \\"He is in the wilderness,\\" do not go out; if they assert, \\"He is in the inner rooms,\\" do not believe them. The deceivers arising before Christ's second coming will distinguish themselves from those before Jerusalem's destruction by presenting magnificent yet false signs and wonders. This describes the Antichrist and his followers, concerning whom the holy Apostle Paul states that his arrival, empowered by Satan, will be characterized by all forms of power, signs, wonders, and every deceptive act of unrighteousness (2 Thess. 2:9-10)."}]}
