Why would Christ's arrival occur in the wilderness? Can it be that He prefers isolation over human fellowship? Is He so apprehensive of humanity that He requires the seclusion of the wild? If He did not shy away from rulers or judges during His Passion, boldly proclaiming the truth to the wicked, how could He possibly fear when He returns to judge the unrighteous? Therefore, if people tell you, ‘Look, He is in the wilderness,’ do not venture out; ‘Look, He is in secret places,’ do not accept it. To seek the One who encompasses all Heaven and earth in hidden locations would offend His divine nature; nor should one assume that He who came to bring low the arrogant and uplift the humble is hiding away. At His initial coming, His divinity was concealed within a mortal body to test the faith of believers. When He returns, He will reveal Himself in splendor to reward those who have faith in Him. Thus, during His first coming, He was sought in order to be believed, but now He will actively seek out those who have believed in Him. The times of the end must be viewed with a spiritual lens. There are two types of heresies: some veil their falsehood by attempting to find support in the divine authority of Scripture, while others do not even make this attempt as they completely contradict Scripture. Consequently, the wilderness symbolizes heresies where the truth of Scripture is wholly disregarded; the hidden chambers represent heresies that incorporate fragments of Scripture yet only appear to convey truth."},{"author-name":"Ambrose of Milan","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88871ceef8c96e0998cd0_Ambrose%20of%20Milan.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"False messengers will emerge, proclaiming that Christ is in the wilderness and leading many astray through their deceptions. The implication is that ‘then,’ referring to the time of the Antichrist’s emergence, numerous false Christs and false prophets will arise, captivating onlookers with awe-inspiring displays of demonic power and misleading many. St. John Chrysostom clarifies that after concluding His prophecy regarding Jerusalem, Christ transitions to speaking about His return. He shares signs that are relevant not only to the disciples but also to us and to all future generations. The Lord continues to reveal what will come, stating, “if anyone says to you, ‘Here is Christ’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will emerge, performing great signs and wonders to lead astray, if that were possible, even the elect. However, you must be vigilant; I have forewarned you about all these things.\\" According to the same holy father, the prophecy does not pertain to the events immediately following the destruction of Jerusalem, but rather to the time right before the close of the age. By bypassing the entire timeframe from Jerusalem's downfall to the end times, Christ addresses the conditions just prior to His return. If they say to you, “He is in the wilderness,” do not go out; “Look, He is in the inner rooms,” do not believe. The deceivers who arise before Christ’s second advent will differ from the ones that appeared prior to Jerusalem's destruction; they will demonstrate great, albeit deceptive, signs and wonders. This refers to the Antichrist and his followers, about whom the holy Apostle Paul asserts that his arrival, in alignment with the workings of Satan, will entail all power, signs, wonders, and a multitude of falsehoods (2 Thess. 2:9, 10)."},{"author-name":"Bogolepow D.P.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"This marks the third occasion on which Jesus Christ has issued warnings about deceivers. In the initial instance (Mt. 4-5), He cautioned against false messiahs; in the subsequent instance (Mt. 11), He alerted against false prophets within the Christian community. Here, He warns against both false prophets and false messiahs simultaneously. The former serve the motives of the latter by misleading individuals and inviting them to the wilderness or to secluded locations, claiming they can reveal Christ there. Given that in the previous passage (Lk. 24), Christ referred to the events following the destruction of Jerusalem and that earlier prophecies about deceivers prior to this tragedy had already been proclaimed, this final warning includes details about how He will manifest Himself. In the following verses (Mt. 29, etc.), He elaborates on the culmination of His coming, describing the end of times and His return. Thus, it can be inferred that a prophecy is being presented here, which primarily relates to the latter days of the world, paralleling what the apostle Paul shared in 2 Thess. 2:9-10. Certain statements from this section are also found in Luke 17:23-24, 37."},{"author-name":"Alexander Gorsky","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8884037c1e1c51e1332e2_Alexander%20Gorsky.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"The Lord conveyed a series of ominous events, focusing particularly on the impending judgment of God regarding Jerusalem. He stated, “As for Jerusalem, the certainty of its destruction is near, when the abomination of desolation, as prophesied by Daniel, will manifest in the holy place. Consequently, anyone who desires to evade this devastation must flee immediately from Judea. Those who choose to remain will undergo a tribulation unprecedented since the dawn of time. There will also be false messiahs among you; do not be deceived by them. The Son of Man will come like lightning, not confined to a specific location or form, but as the execution of divine judgment (Matthew 24:15-28). His glorious revelation will be evident at the culmination of the age (29-31)."}]}
