If we hold the belief that all occurrences and utterances are guided by God's divine plan, we will comprehend that Christ did not aim to instruct those who ceased their inquiries. Instead, Christ longed to enlighten those who were eager to learn from Him and, as a result, desired to engage with His questions. For He who governs the oceans also boldly confronts the audacity of the enemy, possessing the power to establish boundaries at His will."},{"author-name":"Jerome of Stridon","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88dcd3432c6dd41375498_Jerome%20of%20Stridon.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"Those who assembled to challenge Jesus and sought truth through a disingenuous inquiry ultimately found themselves in confusion. They posed the question regarding Christ: Whose son is He? This inquiry from Jesus serves us well in our current engagement with the Jews, as they, while acknowledging that the Messiah is to come, assert that He is merely a man, a righteous individual from David’s lineage. Consequently, we, instructed by the Lord, pose this question to them: If He is simply a man, merely a descendant of David, how is it that David addresses Him as Lord—not of any mistake or personal intention, but through the Holy Spirit, or in the Spirit? The Lord references Psalm 110, indicating that He is recognized as the son of David, not due to birth, but because He is eternally begotten of the Father, existing before the Father Himself in His human form. In their attempts to clarify this matter, the Jews fabricate a multitude of speculative theories, claiming that Abraham had a servant named Eliezer from Damascus and that the Psalm was written in his name. They suggest that after defeating five kings, God said to Abraham, \\"Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool\\" (Psalm 110:1). However, this raises the question: how could God say to Abraham, \\"In the day of Thy power Thy people are willing in the beauty of holiness; from the womb before the dawn, Thou hast the dew of Thy birth\\" (Psalm 110:3)? Additionally, why does the Lord declare, “The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent: Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek” (Psalm 110:4)? They must confront the reality that Abraham existed before the dawn and served as a priest after the order of Melchizedek, who offered him bread and wine and received a tithe of the spoils from him."},{"author-name":"John Chrysostom","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88ea76859f9f8e2ffd3ee_John%20Chrysostom.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"The Saviour, having willingly entered into suffering, references a prophecy that unmistakably identifies Him as the Lord. This citation is neither casual nor without purpose; it serves as a profound counter to their erroneous perceptions. When they incorrectly perceived Him merely as a man, responding by saying \\"David,\\" He counters their misunderstanding by quoting David’s words, which affirm His divine nature. While they viewed Him only as a descendant of David, He clarifies their misconception by citing the prophet, who proclaims Him as both Lord and the true Son of God deserving of the same honor as the Father. Moreover, to instill a sense of reverence, He also refers to the prophet's declaration, \\"Till I make Thy enemies Thy footstool,\\" aiming to draw their attention to Him.\\n\\nTo preclude any notion that David's words were simply human exaggerations, the Saviour questions, \\"How doth David call His Lord by the spirit?\\" This illustrates His careful approach in unveiling the prophet's perspective. Initially, He prompts them with, \\"What think ye of Him? Whose is the Son?\\" to inspire a genuine response. When they assert He is David's Son, He further inquires, \\"How shall David call His Lord?\\" to clarify His doctrine of divinity without contradiction. He specifically avoids saying, \\"As ye think of Me,\\" instead referencing the Messiah. The apostles also approached the subject of David with respectful modesty, acknowledging his significance; however, they emphasize that he died and was buried.\\n\\nThe Saviour employs a method of inquiry to convey His identity, asking how David, in the spirit, refers to Him, restating, \\"The Lord says unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, till I make Thy enemies Thy footstool.\\" He then poses the crucial question, \\"If David call Him Lord, what son is He?\\" (vv. 43-45). This does not deny His lineage as David's Son; rather, it is intended to clarify and challenge the Pharisees' views. Thus, His question, \\"What son is he?\\" implies that He belongs to David's line, but not in the limited way they perceive.\\n\\nThe Pharisees, upon hearing these statements, offered no response, reflecting their unwillingness to acknowledge the truth. The Saviour thus leads them to comprehend that He is Lord even over David. Still, He refrains from direct self-endorsement, quoting the prophet’s words due to their mistrust and negative judgment of Him. Despite His humble manner of expression, which He adopted to align with their perceptions, He continues to reveal His dignity subtly. It is important to note that being acknowledged as Lord over David carries different implications than being recognized as the Lord of the Jews.\\n\\nHe wisely proclaims that there is one Lord and, while identifying Himself as Lord as well, substantiates this not merely through His deeds but also through prophetic testimony. He simultaneously asserts that the Father will hold them accountable, stating, \\"Till I make Thy enemies Thy footstool,\\" thereby affirming His equality and shared dignity with the Father. With this powerful declaration, the Saviour concludes His discourse with the Pharisees, presenting a lofty and compelling truth that leaves them speechless. From that moment, their silence was not by choice, but because they found no grounds for contention, effectively silencing their attempts to question Him (v. 46). This outcome greatly benefited the people, as the Saviour, having vanquished these adversaries and their malicious schemes, ultimately directs His message toward them."},{"author-name":"Euthymios Zigabenos","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":11,"exegesis-text":"Jesus posed a question to them, asking, \\"What are your thoughts on the Messiah? Who is the Son of the Messiah, prophesied by the seers, who has not yet arrived as you claim, yet is anticipated by you?\\" Observe His wisdom. They believed that the Messiah would include something about Himself in the first commandment to affirm His divinity. However, He refrained from doing so, evading their cunning, yet He refers to His divine nature in a subtle manner, to avoid raising suspicions among others. In the context of what others thought, He both inquires and shares His view of the awaited Messiah as Lord and God, while ultimately referring to Himself. They responded by mentioning David, as they were familiar with the prophetic scriptures. They conceived of the Messiah merely as the son of David or a singular human figure, whereas the prophets declared Him not just as a man, but as God Himself."},{"author-name":"Nicephoros (Theotokis)","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8958407451968d9c204fb_Nicephoros%20(Theotokis).png","category":"Christian Authors","century":18,"exegesis-text":"Upon hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees came together to approach Him, possibly anticipating that He would support their faction. His adversaries recognized that even a single piercing beam of Divine truth was enough to clear the obscuring fog of their complexities. While there was a hush among the crowd—some embarrassed by their defeat and others astonished by the extraordinary events—they observed as the Lord continued His teachings within the temple. When the Pharisees gathered, He spoke to them about a matter of great significance. In His effort to rectify misconceptions surrounding the Messiah and to caution the people against being misled by their false beliefs, He inquired, “What do the scribes say concerning Christ, that He is the Son of David? What is your opinion about Christ, is He the Son of David?” He did not phrase it as a question about Himself, but regarding Christ, ensuring that, as noted by St. John Chrysostom, the affirmation of His Deity would not appear incompatible with their views. The Pharisees quickly responded, adhering to their established belief: Davidic. They were aware that, based on God's promise (2 Sam. 7:16; 1 Chron. 17:14; Ps. 88:4-5, 36-38), the Messiah was to arise from the lineage of the King-Prophet David (Jn. 7:42; Acts 13:23). Thus, their response had a factual foundation; however, merely acknowledging the Messiah's earthly descent from the tribe of David while neglecting His Divine majesty did not adequately address the question at hand."},{"author-name":"Bogolepow D.P.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Through this inquiry, Jesus Christ clearly aims to affirm the widely held belief among the Jews that the Messiah is to be a descendant of David, while simultaneously seeking to refine and elevate the understanding of His true nature. The Pharisees, and subsequently the entire nation, failed to recognize that, according to David's own divinely inspired declaration, the Messiah is also his Lord, meaning the Son of God. The impetus for this question posed to Jesus likely arose from the Pharisees' recollection of the Lord's own proclamation regarding His identity as the Son of God, as they sought to elicit a reiteration of this declaration to accuse Him of blasphemy."},{"author-name":"Alexander Gorsky","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8884037c1e1c51e1332e2_Alexander%20Gorsky.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"In these discussions, the topic of the Messiah's identity was briefly addressed. The Lord posed a question to the Pharisees present, asking, \\"How is it that the Messiah referred to David, through the inspiration of the Spirit, as both the son of David and yet his Lord?\\" This inquiry likely aimed to establish scriptural support for His teaching on the Messiah's exalted, divine essence, a truth that was dismissed by those who adhered rigidly to the letter of the law—much like their responses during the Feast of Tabernacles and regarding the temple's restoration. However, they did not provide an answer. Just as they hesitated to respond concerning John to avoid self-contradiction, they also refrained from addressing the question about the Messiah Himself."}]}
