They, lacking an understanding of their own limits, were consumed by an excessive desire for honor. For this reason, the Lord responded to them, saying, “You do not know what you are asking.” It is clear from both the Lord's reply and the apostles’ displeasure that the sons were the ones who instigated their mother to urgently seek significant things on their behalf."},{"author-name":"John Chrysostom","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88ea76859f9f8e2ffd3ee_John%20Chrysostom.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"When did this happen? It was when the Lord admonished those striving for prominence. As Christ was delivering His judgment upon them, the others did not express anger; instead, they observed their own favor and remained subdued, filled with a sense of shame and respect for the Master. Even if they felt inner turmoil, they did not dare to voice it. Similarly, when Peter presented two didrachmas, although others regarded him superficially, they were not resentful but merely inquired, \\"Who is the greatest?\\" (Matthew 18:1). Yet in this instance, when the disciples themselves posed the question, they felt animosity toward them. Even then, their indignation did not emerge until Christ challenged them, stating they could not attain preeminence unless they demonstrated their worthiness for it. Can you perceive how flawed they all were, including those two who aspired to rise above the ten, and those who envied them? However, as I mentioned, examine their later lives, and you will observe their liberation from such passions. Consider how the same John, who initially approached Jesus seeking prominence, later consistently honors Peter in both preaching and miracles, as shown in the Acts of the Apostles. He does not hide his notable achievements but highlights Peter’s confession, made when others were silent, and his entrance into the tomb, thus placing this apostle above himself. During the time of the Crucifixion, John, putting aside his own renown, states, \\"But that disciple was known to the high priest\\" (John 18:15). Concerning James, though his life was short, he was on fire with zeal from the beginning, disregarding all earthly matters and reaching extraordinary glory, ultimately being honored with martyrdom. Therefore, they all later achieved maturity in every virtue, though at that moment they were filled with resentment."},{"author-name":"Anonymous Commentary (Opus Imperfectum)","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":4,"exegesis-text":"As the two were seeking worldly gain, the other ten were similarly troubled by their desires. Had these two grasped the spiritual significance of their requests, they would not have sought to be elevated above their companions. Likewise, if the ten disciples had recognized that others were more deserving, they would not have felt disheartened. To pursue elevation over others is indeed a cause for shame; however, to honor another above oneself is truly commendable. What a beneficial illusion, which liberates all humanity from false perceptions! If the apostles had not succumbed to such misguided thoughts, we might not have understood that not every attractive desire equates to true goodness, as such desires can be misleading. We previously held the belief that the inclination toward wrongdoing, embodied by greed and theft, was evil. Yet now we realize that goodness manifests through righteous actions, and the desire for honor can lead to vanity. The fulfillment of good works relies on our intention, effort, and perseverance, making the reward ours to claim. Striving for supremacy, however, encroaches upon God's domain of judgment. I firmly believe that if we seek first honors for ourselves, we do not merit the reward of righteousness."},{"author-name":"Theophylact of Bulgaria","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8989296bafed9104677d7_Theophylact%20of%20Bulgaria.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":11,"exegesis-text":"Upon witnessing two of their number being rebuked by Christ, the ten disciples became upset and realized that they too desired similar recognition. When Christ granted them greater recognition in the eyes of others, they accepted it without discontent, truly out of their reverence for Him. Upon hearing the request made by the sons of Zebedee, the other ten apostles were displeased with the two brothers, harboring resentment for their lofty ambitions. This aspiration for superiority among the apostles resulted in a disturbance of harmony among them. Thus, ambition breeds discord and strife. St. Chrysostom points out the imperfections present in all of them, noting that both those who sought to elevate themselves above the others and those who envied them displayed this flaw. However, he emphasizes that John, although he seeks prominence, continually yields it to Peter in both preaching and performing miracles. John does not shy away from acknowledging Peter’s remarkable deeds, consistently affirming his confession and placing this apostle above himself. Upon hearing their whispered discussions, Jesus summoned them and said: \\"You are aware that in this world, the rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their high officials exert authority over them (Matt. 20:25); however, My realm is not akin to the kingdoms of this world. Therefore, if anyone desires to enter My kingdom, they must not behave in this manner: whoever aspires to greatness must become the servant of all, and whoever aims to be first must be the lowest, acting as a servant. I did not come into this world to exercise dominion over people or to be served, but to serve and to offer My life as a ransom for many. Thus, you should do likewise. Even if you consistently obey My commands and fulfill all that is required, do not let pride consume you or raise yourselves up, for you will merely be faithful executors of God’s will, fulfilling the obligations He has entrusted to you."},{"author-name":"Paul Matwejewski","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8969f5be0d592d5a10576_Paul%20Matwejewski.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"The words of the Savior revealed to the sons of Zebedee that they were unaware of the true nature of their request. This exchange, although conducted away from the other apostles, quickly became known among the ten, leading to their discontent and murmuring against those seeking authority, which caused offense. In response to their anger, the Lord gathered them and imparted the foundational principle of Gospel ethics—loving one another with genuine humility. He stated, \\"Behold, as the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant; and whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.\\" Through this teaching, Jesus addressed the ambitious aspirations of His followers at their root, clarifying that His mission was not to establish an earthly reign but to endure suffering and offer Himself as an atonement for humanity's sins. The apostles needed to understand from their Master’s example that the path to true glory lies in humility and selfless service for the benefit of others, a glory that is not fleeting or vain, but lasting and eternal."},{"author-name":"Bogolepow D.P.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Although the Lord did not explicitly promise to grant the request of the sons of Zebedee, their appeal ignited jealousy among the other apostles, leading to resentment towards James and John. This led to dissatisfaction and murmuring among them, not entirely unjustified given their aspirations for greatness, yet ultimately futile as they were pursuing an unattainable goal. Peter, who held a prominent place among Jesus' followers like the sons of Salome (Matthew 19:27; Mark 10:41-45), had every right to seek distinction but was particularly troubled. However, he never ascended to such a level of sanctity that he wished to dominate his fellow disciples, finding comfort instead in the Master’s assurance that each would be granted a unique throne. This shared discontent among the disciples prompted a profound lesson from the Lord on humility and mutual love. \\"You are aware,\\" He said, gathering them close, \\"of how worldly rulers derive their authority from being served, obeyed, honored, and exalted. Yet among you—My disciples—this must not be the case; none should aspire to prominence at the expense of another. If anyone desires to be the greatest, let him be your servant; and if anyone wishes to be first, let him serve you all.\\" The Lord then emphasized a crucial point which the disciples had overlooked: \\"Remember that the Son of Man, to whom all glory is due, did not come into this world as many falsely believed to conquer nations and claim accolades, but to bestow them upon others and to sacrifice His very life for the redemption of humanity.\\" Thus, although the disciples could not agree on the dignity of the Messiah—His suffering and death—Jesus repeatedly stressed that this was the fundamental purpose of His coming. Such frequent and emphatic reminders should have diverted them entirely from their ambitious aspirations. However, their preconceived notions about the Messiah’s earthly kingdom were deeply entrenched, and the reality of the cross and Calvary did not entirely dispel them. Even after the resurrection, at His initial appearance, they would question Him, \\"Have you now established the kingdom of Israel?\\" It was only with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost that they were truly revitalized, dispelling all carnal understanding, allowing them to echo the words of St. Paul: \\"Though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we do not know Him this way.\\""}]}
