When He acknowledged the glory of chastity with the words, “And there are some who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:12), some individuals present brought their young children—embodiments of innocent purity—before Him. They misinterpreted His praise as solely directed toward those who are physically chaste, overlooking the spiritual purity valued by the Lord. Unbeknownst to them, the Lord did not commend those who are chaste out of mere necessity, but rather those who choose abstinence through virtuous intention. However, the disciples prevented the children from approaching Him, reflecting the flesh's tendency toward vice rather than virtue. The flesh delights not in goodness and swiftly forgets it, yet it clings to wickedness, as if it were deeply rooted in the heart. A person cannot forget what they cherish nor retain memories of what they detest. Just recently, Christ had called a child unto Him, indicating, “Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). Yet, the disciples promptly disregarded the purity of the children, hindering their access to Christ, despite having been instructed to embody childlike humility themselves (Matthew 18:4). If even innocent children are deemed unworthy, who then is fit to approach Christ? The apostles believed they were honoring the Lord; however, their actions actually detracted from His glory. Just as it is detrimental for a physician to be separated from the sick, it is a loss for Christ when those whom He seeks to save are turned away."},{"author-name":"Hilarius of Poitiers","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88cb92f12b3278598f946_Hilarius%20of%20Poitiers.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"The children were brought to Jesus, yet they faced obstacles. His boundless benevolence, in stark contrast to the disdainful attitude of the proud Pharisees and scribes, drew many mothers to Him, who cherished the opportunity to receive His blessing for their children. It was customary for Jewish mothers to seek blessings for their children from rabbis, yet they approached the Savior with unique enthusiasm, fully assured that He would welcome them. At the commencement of His ministry, He consecrated and adorned the wedding in Cana of Galilee with His presence and the first miracle (John 2:2, 11). Now, as His time on earth drew to a close, He manifested Himself as the true Friend and Guardian of vulnerable infancy and unkind youth. News of the arrival of the Savior quickly spread throughout the region, prompting devout mothers to bring their children to the revered Teacher and Miracle Worker. Due to the large crowd, not everyone held on to hope for their desires to be met. However, their deep reverence for Christ made them content with even a brief touch from the Lord upon their children. The disciples, perhaps thinking that such matters were trivial and unworthy of the Lord's attention, tried to prevent the mothers from approaching Him. This foolish action troubled Jesus deeply, and He became indignant with them. When He later commanded that the children be brought to Him, He not only touched and laid His hands upon them but also embraced them in a gesture of love, blessing them and demonstrating His fondness for their pure and innocent nature. He further instructed His disciples that these children are among the most deserving members of God's kingdom, emphasizing that adults must also approach the kingdom with a heart like that of a child."}]}
