The Gospel of John recounts that they desired to welcome Him aboard, and consequently, the vessel was anchored, and they boarded it (John 6:21). These statements illustrate that Jesus entered the boat only after the disciples had nearly reached the land. When Peter stepped out onto the water, his joy was not solely due to walking on water, but rather the fact that he was approaching Jesus. However, having triumphed over the daunting challenge, he found himself nearly undone by the seemingly minor force of the wind, not the sea. This reflects the human condition: often, individuals conquer great obstacles, only to be hindered by lesser ones. Just as Elijah faced trials from Jezebel, Moses faced struggles from the Egyptian, and David encountered hardships from Bathsheba, Peter too experienced similar challenges. Initially, he had the courage to walk on water, even amidst his fear, yet he faltered against the might of the wind, despite being in close proximity to Christ. This indicates that mere physical closeness to Christ is inadequate for those lacking faith. Furthermore, it underscores the distinction between the disciple and his Lord, offering reassurance to the rest. If they had harbored resentment toward the two brothers, their feelings toward Peter would have been even stronger, as they had not yet received the Holy Spirit. Upon receiving the Spirit, their transformation was evident, as they ultimately acknowledged Peter’s leadership, allowing him to address the gathering, despite his lesser eloquence compared to the others."},{"author-name":"Hilarius of Poitiers","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88cb92f12b3278598f946_Hilarius%20of%20Poitiers.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"Peter's willingness to speak up in the boat and request the Lord's command to walk on the water reflects his strong resolve during a time of trial. As he follows the Lord, disregarding the chaos of both the world and the stormy sea, Peter demonstrates a remarkable courage that allows him to confront death itself. However, his fear reveals his vulnerability when faced with impending suffering. Even though he stepped onto the water, he soon began to falter. Overwhelmed by his human frailty and fear, he reached a moment of doubt. Yet, in his distress, Peter calls out to the Lord for deliverance. This plea is a heartfelt cry of repentance. Though the Lord had not yet embraced the suffering, Peter redirects his heart towards faith and, at the appropriate moment, receives mercy for his denial."},{"author-name":"Theophylact of Bulgaria","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8989296bafed9104677d7_Theophylact%20of%20Bulgaria.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":11,"exegesis-text":"Observe this: Peter, who had triumphed over the ferocity of the sea, became fearful of the wind. Peter's spirited resolve banished all fear from his heart; this boldness led him to step out of the boat, walk on the water, and traverse the sea. Yet, when he perceived the fierce wind and felt himself being engulfed by the waves, his bodily frailty triumphed over his spirited courage, leading him to fear. This reflects human nature: we often accomplish remarkable feats, yet we are quick to fear and doubt over seemingly small matters. He strides across the sea without trepidation, yet trembles at the wind. Elijah experienced this too; despite performing numerous miracles, he succumbed to fear at Jezebel's threats (1 Kings 19:3). Similarly, Moses, after slaying the Egyptian, feared the words of his fellow Hebrew (Exodus 2:14). Many devout individuals face such challenges: they may venture boldly into the path of righteousness where Jesus leads, unafraid of trials or adversities, only to become troubled and retreat when confronted with minor temptations or dangers. However, Peter offers a model for saints in such situations. He felt fear and doubt but did not retreat or despair. Instead, he cried out fervently: ‘Lord, save me!’ – and in this call, he found deliverance."},{"author-name":"Theophan the Recluse","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8983a6e0f4c3aecaae3fc_Theophan%20the%20Recluse.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":19,"exegesis-text":"He had begun to tread a new journey, needing only to deepen his faith by turning to the Lord, who is ever-present, and by embracing the experience of moving forward through His strength. Even while fear still gripped him, he had the courage to walk on the waters, but he was unable to withstand the force of the wind, despite being close to Christ. However, the persistent wind and tumultuous waves distracted him from Jesus, who awaited him. Fear overwhelmed him, causing his faith to falter, and he began to sink into the depths. In his urgency, he cried out: Lord, save me. Christ did not still the wind or waves, but extended His hand to Peter, lifting him up, and asked, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt? What caused your faith to waver, the very faith that enabled you to step out of the boat and walk toward Me on the water?' Jesus intentionally did not immediately calm the stormy sea; He wished to demonstrate to Peter that, with restored faith, he could walk upon the waters once more. As they made their way back to the boat, the wind fell silent. This account from the Evangelist reveals that despite the stormy waters, both Jesus and Peter traversed the sea, and it was only after they had entered the boat that the winds ceased."},{"author-name":"Lopuchin A.P.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c891400ee1341634d2276d_Lopuchin%20A.P..png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"...yet when, in his wavering faith, he gazed upon the raging waves and the dark chasm below, he started to descend, and with a voice filled with despair, so unlike his earlier boldness, he cried out in fear: “Lord, save me!”"}]}
