Additionally, the instruction to \\"Leave both to grow together until the harvest\\" appears to oppose the command to \\"Remove evil from your midst\\" (Deuteronomy 13:5) as well as the call to avoid fellowship with those who, despite being labeled as brethren, engage in immoral behavior. If it is prohibited to eliminate the tares and we are instead to be patient until the harvest, then how do we justify their exclusion from our community? There exists a striking similarity between wheat and tares, commonly regarded as weeds while still in their grassy form before producing ears; distinguishing between the two is often challenging due to the lack of clear identifiers. The Lord thus cautions against swift judgment in moments of uncertainty and instructs us to entrust the ultimate verdict to God, the true Judge. On the day of judgment, He will not expel a merely suspected wrongdoer from the congregation of the faithful but will instead remove the clear transgressor. His declaration that the bundles of tares will be cast into the fire while the wheat will be gathered into the barn illustrates the fate of all heretics and dissemblers, who shall face the flames of judgment, whereas the saints, referred to as wheat, will be welcomed into the glorious heavenly dwelling places."},{"author-name":"Chromatius of Aquileia","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88a3df6d7a747a33b4f4a_Chromatius%20of%20Aquileia.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":5,"exegesis-text":"When the servants of the householder, namely the apostles, informed the Lord of their intention to distinguish the tares from the wheat, He chose to allow both to flourish until a designated time, specifically until the conclusion of the age. He clearly indicates that at that moment, He will dispatch reapers, meaning angels, to differentiate the wheat from the tares, signifying the selection of the righteous from among the wicked, placing the just into the kingdom of heaven like wheat gathered into granaries, while the wicked and sinners will be cast into the fires of Gehenna like tares. The Lord makes it clear that there will be perpetual weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place: \\"There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there\\" (Matt. 13:42). By declaring that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, He undoubtedly refers to the future resurrection not only of the spirit, as some heretics assert, but also of the physical body. This is because weeping with one’s eyes and gnashing of teeth are inflicted upon the body. Thus, from the Lord's words, we can grasp the significant error held by various heretics who deny the reality of a future bodily resurrection."},{"author-name":"Theophylact of Bulgaria","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8989296bafed9104677d7_Theophylact%20of%20Bulgaria.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":11,"exegesis-text":"Thus, the Lord instructs the angels that when the end of the age arrives, they are to collect the tares, referring to the heretics. How will this gathering be accomplished? They will be tied in bundles, meaning their hands and feet will be bound, rendering them powerless, as all active force will be restrained. The wheat, symbolizing the saints, will be gathered by the angelic harvesters into the heavenly storehouses. Similarly, the wicked thoughts that Paul harbored during his time of persecution were consumed by the purifying fire of Christ, which He came to set upon the earth. In contrast, the wheat, representing the righteous thoughts, will be gathered into the sanctuary of the church."},{"author-name":"Euthymios Zigabenos","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":11,"exegesis-text":"Let both types of individuals coexist until the time of reaping, as the harvest signifies the culmination of the age. He instructs that both groups be allowed to thrive and multiply until the conclusion of the age, for it is possible that many who have strayed may find repentance before that time. However, they must be cautious not to intermingle with those heretics; the world is vast, and they are to maintain their distinctness, not for destruction, but for separation, to ensure that their teachings do not taint the grain of the One who sowed. At the time of harvest, the gathering will involve the inhabitants referring to the Angels. The tares are to be collected first. The sickle of death will be used to sever the tares that are found at that moment. Why are the tares gathered first? To ensure that the believers who are harvested alongside the heretics do not anticipate any harm. They are to be bound in bundles, united with one another. This signifies that those who have participated in sin will face the common fate and share in collective retribution. As for me, I will harvest the bundles; however, I will collect the wheat into my storehouse. Similarly, John the Baptist warned the Sadducees and Pharisees in the third chapter, stating about Christ that He would ‘gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ Here, the references to burning and tares do not require further explanation, as the meaning has already been established."},{"author-name":"Theophan the Recluse","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8983a6e0f4c3aecaae3fc_Theophan%20the%20Recluse.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":19,"exegesis-text":"This gathering signifies repentance. The Lord dispatches His angels, embodying a sense of contrition and reverence for God, who, like a sickle, consumes all the weeds and incinerates them in the agony of self-condemnation. What should be done? It is better to let them both grow together until the harvest. However, its expansion would not be free from the deceptions of the initial foe, who would employ every form of malice to hinder or obstruct the progress of that kingdom. In this context, “the kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field,” yet during the night, his adversary stealthily sowed weeds among the wheat to suffocate the good crop. When the servants observed this, they suggested to their master to remove the weeds that had emerged, but he replied, “No; in picking out the tares you may pull out the wheat with them. Therefore leave both to grow until the harvest,” at which point the harvesters will have the chance to gather the tares without damaging the wheat. Following the master’s command, they will bind the tares in bundles and burn them, while the wheat will be safely stored in the barn."}]}
