For this reason, He was not content with a simple statement; instead, by illustrating the nature of the conflict, He reveals that it will be significantly more dreadful than even civil unrest. Not only will acquaintances and neighbors turn against one another, but even family members will confront each other, leading to discord among their kin. This indicates that strife will arise not just within families but also amongst those bound by deep affection and strong connections. This aspect particularly highlights Christ's authority, as the disciples, upon hearing such pronouncements, accepted them and convinced others. While it is the malice of humanity that instigates these conflicts, it is attributed to Him. Such phraseology is characteristic of Scripture. Similarly, it is stated elsewhere that God gave them eyes to see but did not perceive (Ezekiel 12:2). Christ uses this language here too, so that the disciples, as mentioned earlier, accustomed to this way of speaking, might remain steadfast even amidst the harshest slurs and offenses. However, if some find this troubling, let them recall the lessons of the past. History has shown that the same was true previously, reinforcing the continuity between the old covenant and the new, as the same One who delivered the commandments is present here. Among the Israelites, for instance, during the incident with the idol (Ex. 32:28; Num. 25:3), when one person slew his neighbor, God’s wrath was mitigated. Therefore, where are those who claim that the God of the Old Testament was malevolent and the God of the New is benevolent? Behold, this God has filled the earth with the blood of His own people. Yet, we assert that even this reflects an act of profound mercy."},{"author-name":"Ephraem the Syrian","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88b589fc3e99eb7bb1839_Ephraem%20the%20Syrian.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"Thus, we impart the teachings of Christ to those receptive, acting as a leaven that transforms them by both separating and uniting them—separating them from the dense mass of the world while drawing them closer to Christ, who fosters the unity of the Church. One who possesses a grand crown must also engage in significant endeavors. Although this is generally true, the glory of our triumph cannot be measured against the triviality of the challenges faced. We must take caution that we do not allow a subtle deception to infiltrate us, cloaking itself in our own defenses, for it can present itself in various forms and dilute its influence with many distractions. As Christians, we embody a spiritual Israel, undergoing a metaphorical circumcision of the heart, experiencing the blessings of new birth, and attaining wholeness through the redemptive power of Christ's sacrifice. They are divided, as it is said, in their thoughts because they misunderstand the essence of faith; one person honors God in one manner, while another honors Him in a different way."},{"author-name":"Hilarius of Poitiers","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88cb92f12b3278598f946_Hilarius%20of%20Poitiers.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"Through the transformative power of the Word, we experience renewal in the waters of baptism, which liberates us from original sin and its origins, causing the divine sword of God to sever our attachments to earthly parents. This indicates that peace resides with those who have faith and accept it. Yet, why is peace not established throughout the earth? When the daughter has faith but the father does not, what union can exist between believers and non-believers (2 Cor. 6:15)? The announcement of peace often leads to division. When a son is a believer and his father does not share that faith, conflict becomes unavoidable. This proclaimed peace, while it creates division, is a beneficial one. I also came to divide a daughter from her mother. The people of God are to be set apart from the secular community, distancing themselves from the harmful society symbolized in Scripture as Babylon, Egypt, Sodom, and other names. Furthermore, there is a division between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, highlighting the separation of the Church from the synagogue, which, in the flesh, gave birth to Christ, the Bridegroom of the Church. This division occurs through the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Eph. 6:17). Here, through the most affectionate terms of familial connection, it is conveyed that there will be a rift between a son and his father, as well as between a daughter and her mother. This division is significant because a son holds a special place in his father's heart, just as a daughter is cherished by her mother. Furthermore, the rift also extends to the daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law, reflecting the deep reverence, honor, and obedience a daughter-in-law traditionally shows. The term daughter-in-law can similarly be seen to encompass the son-in-law's separation from his father-in-law. Earlier, a simpler listing was provided, stating, 'But a brother shall deliver up his brother to death, and a father his child' (Matthew 10:21), whereas this context offers a more nuanced and thorough approach. If indeed a man could be distanced from his father, to whom he is obedient, it is even more likely that he would be separated from his wife, who is placed under his care; there, love exists by nature, while here, it is determined by roles. The former relationship is held in higher regard, thus the latter’s implied significance is understood. Subsequently, spouses are mentioned directly when He says, And everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields for My name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life (Matt. 19:29)."},{"author-name":"Gladkow B.I.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88bf0ceef8c96e09a6521_Gladkow%20B.I..png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"When we acknowledge Christ, our love for Him must surpass all other affections, including those for our parents.
