There was no obscurity when Christ communicated this, nor did He whisper to His disciples; rather, He employed an intensified and focused speech. Addressing them in solitude in a secluded area of Palestine, He conveyed His message—within the shadows and to their ears—aiming to juxtapose the essence of genuine dialogue with the boldness required for their preaching. He instructed them not to confine their message to one or two cities but to share it across the entirety of the world, encouraging them to traverse land and sea, through both populated and desolate places, with their heads held high and with great courage, proclaiming all truths to kings and nations, to scholars and orators. Therefore, He stated, \\"On the blood and in the light,\\" meaning without fear and with total liberty. \\n\\nBut why did He not merely say: preach in the blood, and speak in the light, instead adding, \\"I speak unto you in darkness,\\" and \\"You hear in your ears\\"? This was to uplift their spirits. Just as He expressed elsewhere, \\"He that believeth in Me, the works that I do, this one also shall do, and greater works than these he shall do\\" (John 14:12), He included these words here to illustrate that He would achieve all things through them, and that they would do even greater things than He had accomplished. He declared, \\"I have initiated a plan and a purpose, and through you, I aim to achieve far more.\\" In sharing this, He not only imparts a directive but also prophesies the future with firm assurance of the truth of His declarations, indicating that they would triumph over all obstacles, and He effectively removes from them the fear of slander. Just as this sermon, now seemingly ordinary, will spread far and wide, so too will the negative perceptions held by the Jews soon fade away."},{"author-name":"Ephraem the Syrian","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88b589fc3e99eb7bb1839_Ephraem%20the%20Syrian.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"\\"What I tell you in the dark, proclaim in the light\\" invites us to share in boldness what has been revealed to us privately. Yet, one might question, ‘If it is beneficial to declare one's truth openly, why did He choose to speak in obscurity? And if it is advantageous to proclaim from the rooftops, why did He confide only in a whisper?’ Had He spoken solely from His own authority, it would have been false, as the Jews claimed, ‘Thou hast testified of Thyself; Thy testimony is not true (Jn. 8:13).’ To avoid appearing as though He sought glory for Himself and to ensure He spoke for the sake of truth—while preventing the Jews, who were eager to act, from hastening His suffering ordained by the Father—He deliberately chooses moments of silence, commanding His disciples to proclaim His message instead. This action is not born of fear (which is characteristic of those ignorant of the majesty of the Lord Jesus), but rather reflects His sovereign judgment of when to remain silent and when to express the truth."},{"author-name":"Anonymous Commentary (Opus Imperfectum)","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":4,"exegesis-text":"What is the meaning of the phrase: What I tell you in darkness, speak in light? He identifies the Jewish people as darkness, as indicated in Scripture: And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overwhelmed it (John 1:5). The Jews are considered darkness because they failed to recognize the true light. Thus, the Lord proclaimed that all He communicated to the Jews should be revealed in the Church. The light represents the Christian community, as stated by the Apostle: Ye were once darkness, but now are light in the Lord: walk as children of light (Eph. 5:8). In other words, what I say to you in obscurity, proclaim in brightness; this signifies ‘What I convey to you now in the secrecy of parables, share openly later.’\\n\\nNow He foretells the forthcoming success of their ministry, assuring them that their preaching will yield a glorious outcome. ‘Behold, I Myself, the concealed light in darkness, God veiled in humanity, greatness in humility. Just as this mystery was hidden throughout the ages, it will now be unveiled to all through you, fulfilling the prophecy that spoke of Me: From the end of the heavens is his departure, and his march to the end of them, and nothing is hidden from his warmth (Psalm 18:7). Just as there is no place where the sun does not shine or where its warmth is not experienced, so there will be no location where Christ is unknown or His divinity unacknowledged; thus, all of creation will be divided into two groups, with the faithful justly rewarded and the unfaithful facing inevitable judgment."},{"author-name":"Augustine of Hippo","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88950a5c988a4fc06c7ae_Augustine%20of%20Hippo.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":5,"exegesis-text":"I speak to you amidst shadows, indicating that you remain bound by worldly fears, as darkness breeds fear.
