The warning to 'beware' encourages prudence; avoid unnecessary peril, refrain from provoking hostility and persecution, and guard your life, which is precious to the mission of spreading the Gospel. \\n\\nWhen it comes to 'giving to the judgments,' this refers to the courts where offenses that did not fall under the jurisdiction of the supreme authority, the Sanhedrin, were addressed, found in every city and larger settlement (see note on Matthew 5:22). \\n\\nThe statement 'in the synagogues they would scourge' indicates that those who committed offenses could be punished within these places (Acts 22:19; Acts 26:11). Offenders faced beatings with a rod or cane. The Mosaic Law stipulated that no more than 40 lashes could be administered (Deuteronomy 25:2, 3). The individual condemned to such punishment would lie on the ground, receiving blows on the back in the presence of a judge, sometimes secured to a post. Metal wires could be attached to the ends of the rods, resulting in whippings known as scorpions (1 Kings 12:11). To ensure that the prescribed limit of lashes was not exceeded, the Jews often used scourges with three tails, delivering three strikes simultaneously, and typically employed 13 of these, totaling 39 blows. This practice is how the Apostle Paul experienced scourging (2 Cor. 11:24)."},{"author-name":"Gladkow B.I.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88bf0ceef8c96e09a6521_Gladkow%20B.I..png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Be cautious of those who may attack you like wolves among sheep. Avoid placing your life at unnecessary risk and refrain from provoking unwarranted hostility towards yourself. Exercise prudence and allow your discernment to guide you in determining when to share the word of God and when to withhold it, following my instruction—do not give what is sacred to dogs, nor cast your treasures before swine (Matthew 7:6). However, if your discernment indicates that avoiding the impending danger would compromise your apostolic responsibilities, do not fear the trials that may come: my adversaries will bring you to trial and beat you in their assemblies.
