Those who ignored the apostles witnessed signs, as it is stated, “the blind see” (cf. Matt. 11:5), yet in Sodom, the angels rendered the onlookers blind (Gen. 19:11). Thus, the city of Sodom, notorious for its wickedness, will rejoice even more. Sodom and Gomorrah, once thriving cities, were completely consumed by heavenly fire due to their profound wickedness. This divine retribution appears to be the most severe of all, as the land remains scorched and serves as a testament to its calamity. Yet, Christ warns that a greater condemnation awaits those who reject and disregard the teachings of the apostles. Unlike the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, who had not witnessed the multitude of miracles performed by Christ or received His disciples, these people have seen such wonders. The statement that “more gladly will the land of Sodom and Gomorrah be in the day of judgment” indicates that, even in the afterlife, those from Sodom and Gomorrah will face consequences for their actions. This makes it evident that certain transgressions, both in this life and the next, will face divine punishment. Let us therefore take heed of this warning, recognizing that anyone who fails to observe and obey the teachings of the Apostles clearly does not accept or heed their messages. Why is there punishment for the entire city when one person refuses to believe? Because the wider community did not intercede for him, just as those who rejected the Apostles openly expelled them."},{"author-name":"Theophan the Recluse","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8983a6e0f4c3aecaae3fc_Theophan%20the%20Recluse.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":19,"exegesis-text":"The Lord informed the apostles that should any city refuse to welcome them and disregard their message, ‘it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.' Consider what awaits those who ignore the messages of Divine Revelation. Our despair will know no bounds. After receiving so many concrete evidences, to reject the truth of God equates to blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. Yet, we are not disheartened. One spiritualist speaks of comfort: ‘What a trial! We will only need to be reborn.’ Meanwhile, the scribes declare: ‘Who is to be judged? All atoms are simply atoms: they will disperse, and everything will conclude.’ However, the moment of death will inevitably arrive, dear friends; these illusions will vanish like phantoms, and reality will present itself with its unyielding nature. What then? Our fleeting existence! The adversary seeks to lead our souls to ruin. He understands that the dread of death and judgment serves as the most potent catalyst for awakening the spirit, and he diligently works to scatter that dread in every possible manner, and he often succeeds. Should this fear be extinguished, the reverence of God will fade, and in the absence of this reverence, the conscience becomes silent. Thus, the soul becomes desolate, akin to a cloud without water, tossed about by every breeze of ideology and every surge of passion."},{"author-name":"Abbot Panteleimon about the Trinity","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"TRULY I TELL YOU: IT WILL BE MORE SEVERE FOR THE LAND OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH, which lacked the hearing of the gospel of salvation, on the day of judgment, that final great day when I will judge all nations, THAN FOR THAT CITY OR VILLAGE, which has rejected the message of salvation; for the people of Sodom were guided solely by their consciences, and through this, the will of God is revealed to you more clearly and completely; thus, whoever ignores your message bears greater guilt than the Sodomites. Furthermore, the Sodomites, who have already faced punishment for their sins on earth, will endure a milder consequence in the hereafter. Therefore, it is evident, the interpreter points out, that certain transgressions will incur punishment both now and later. Consequently, we must heed such warnings, knowing that anyone who fails to observe and carry out what the apostles have taught clearly does not accept them or heed their words. What is particularly alarming is that an entire city or community can face judgment, even if a single household did not welcome the preaching; this occurs because the others did not restrain this individual, having witnessed their actions, as those who disregarded the apostles openly expelled them. ‘Observe,’ says St. Chrysostom, ‘that the Lord does not bestow all gifts upon the Apostles, for He does not grant them foreknowledge to discern the worthy from the unworthy, but instructs them to investigate and await the evidence of experience. They were to humble themselves, despite their imperfections. The Lord desired that the Apostles be recognized not only for their miracles but even more so for their virtues. The false apostles were aware of this truth, which is why Paul remarks, “That in what they boast, they may be like us” (2 Corinthians 11:12). In his commentary on this passage from the Gospel of Matthew, St. John Chrysostom, as shepherd and successor of the Apostles, offers this exhortation to his listeners: ‘The Church is a shared dwelling for all, where we (shepherds) come after you, following the example of the Apostles, greeting everyone with peace according to the same standard. Hence, let no one be careless, let no one be inattentive when the priests enter and greet: for such negligence incurs significant punishment. When I say, “Peace be with you,” you should respond, “And with your spirit,”—not merely with your voice, but from the heart, not just with your mouth, but with your spirit as well. Otherwise, if you express peace to your spirit here but then go outside to belittle me and speak ill of me, what kind of peace is that? Nevertheless, even if you malign me in every possible way, I extend to you peace from a pure heart and with genuine intent, reflecting a fatherly love.’ ‘The humble, who sincerely seek salvation,’ says Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow, ‘listen even to a modest teacher and succeed in doing good. In contrast, the one who, due to pride or distraction, disregards an ordinary instructor will hardly benefit from an outstanding one. Cultivate a genuine desire for teachings that save the soul; be ready to embrace them in faith; for God is mighty and faithful, wanting all to be saved, and even through an unworthy teacher, He can impart perfect instruction,’ just as He once revealed His intentions through the speechless donkey of Balaam."},{"author-name":"Michail (Lusin)","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c89550c567e172d15b3055_Michail%20(Lusin).png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, along with Adam and Seboim, faced destruction by fire and brimstone due to the profound wickedness of their people. These cities were situated near what is now the Dead Sea, lying on the southern edge of Palestine (Genesis 19:24-25). In Scripture, the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah is frequently depicted as a powerful illustration of divine retribution for sin, serving as a reminder that transgression and moral corruption are not overlooked. \\n\\nConcerning \\"the day of judgment,\\" this refers to the final judgment that Christ the King will carry out at the end of time (Matt. 25:31-46). The Lord indicates that the punishment for the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah will be less severe than that of those who rejected the apostolic message, including the apostles themselves. This is grounded in the moral principle that the degree of guilt increases with the clarity and completeness of God’s will that is violated, resulting in a corresponding increase in punishment. Therefore, those who turned away from Christ's message bear greater guilt than those who ignored the natural law as understood by their consciences, since the latter were not privy to the explicit law of God (cf. Matthew 11:20 and Luke 12:47-48)."},{"author-name":"Gladkow B.I.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88bf0ceef8c96e09a6521_Gladkow%20B.I..png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"If someone does not offer you hospitality and refuses to heed your message, do not remain in that home or town. The Jews were concerned about becoming ceremonially unclean through their association with Gentiles and believed that the very ground on which the Gentiles walked was polluted. Therefore, they felt it necessary to remove the dust from their feet to purify themselves from contamination. Upon identifying such a person, stay at their home and share your message from there. The Lord assures grace and peace to all who welcome them, but warns of a judgment harsher than that faced by Sodom and Gomorrah for those who turn them away. While the specifics of where the apostles ministered and for what duration remain unclear, it is evident that their separation could not have been extensive. The Savior did not send them to a single location, but rather in pairs, enabling them to reach six different areas He Himself had not visited. Such opportunities were limited not only in Galilee but also in Judea. It is likely they had a pressing timeline for their return, as evidenced by their simultaneous return; had no time frame been established, some would have arrived earlier than others."}]}
