When the apostles arrived in a new city, they were unfamiliar with the character of its inhabitants. Thus, they had to select a host based on the positive views of the local community and the assessment of neighbors, ensuring that the integrity of their preaching would not be compromised by the poor reputation of their host. While all are called to proclaim the message, a welcoming host is specifically chosen—one who does not prioritize his own desires over those of the guest but instead recognizes that by receiving the guest, he is the one who is graced beyond what he can offer."},{"author-name":"John Chrysostom","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88ea76859f9f8e2ffd3ee_John%20Chrysostom.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"When I stated, ‘He that is worthy of his wages,’ the intent was not to imply that everyone should be admitted indiscriminately. Rather, I urge you to act with great care in this matter, as it will enable you to secure both respect and provision. If the individual who welcomes you is deserving, he will undoubtedly provide for you, particularly if your needs are modest. Christ instructs us not only to identify those who are worthy but also to refrain from moving from house to house, in order to avoid offending our hosts or being criticized for excessive indulgence and carelessness. This is echoed in His words, ‘Stay there until you go out.’ Similar sentiments are reflected in the accounts of other evangelists. Notice how He thereby bestows honor upon the disciples and encourages their hosts to be more eager to welcome them, demonstrating that this approach will yield far greater glory and benefit."},{"author-name":"Ambrose of Milan","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88871ceef8c96e0998cd0_Ambrose%20of%20Milan.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"A primary mandate of peace and unity is directed toward those who proclaim the Gospel: they are called to promote tranquility, to remain steadfast, and to uphold the bonds of warm hospitality. This instruction makes it clear that heralds of the Kingdom of God are not to move from place to place nor disregard the principles of hospitality. They are instructed to express gratitude for the kindness offered to them and, if they encounter unwelcoming attitudes, to shake the dust off their feet and leave that city. This teaching emphasizes that acts of hospitality will bring forth abundant blessings: to those who show kindness, we extend our peace, and if they are burdened by the light dust of earthly offenses, they are liberated when they provide refuge for the steps of the apostolic messengers. It is noteworthy that the Gospel of Matthew advises the apostles to discern the households they visit, ensuring they do not shift their place of stay and thus disrupt the customs of hospitality. Such discernment, however, is not required of the host, for selecting guests would undermine the very essence of hospitality.\\n\\nWhile the direct mandate concerning the noble practice of hospitality is commendable, its spiritual interpretation carries profound sacramental significance. When selecting a home, one seeks a deserving host. Does this not suggest a preference for the Church and Christ? What dwelling is more suitable for the apostles than the holy Church itself? And who surpasses all others? Is it not Christ, who humbly washes the feet of those He welcomes? He does not permit those who enter His abode to remain unclean. Despite their past transgressions, He graciously purifies them for everlasting life. He is the sole figure whom none should forsake or replace. He is the only one to whom we should direct our plea, saying, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed” (John 6:68-69). Consider Peter, the embodiment of heavenly precepts, who accepted hospitality and thus merited a share in divine sanctification.\\n\\nTherefore, the foremost consideration is the faith of the Church: if Christ resides within it, it must certainly be the chosen one! However, if the individuals present are unbelievers or if a heretical teacher brings disgrace to the household, one should not associate with such heretics and must distance oneself from that gathering. One should shake the dust from one's feet to avoid allowing the spiritual feet to become sullied by the aridity of barren disbelief, akin to dry soil. The preacher of the Gospel must bear the physical shortcomings of the faithful and remove the weight of their futile actions from his own feet, treating them as dust, as it is stated, “Who is weak, and I am not weak?” (2 Corinthians 11:29). If there exists a community that denies the faith and lacks a foundation in apostolic teaching, it must be forsaken to prevent the spread of disbelief's contagion. The Apostle explicitly instructs: “After one admonition to a heretic, reject him” (Titus 3:10)."},{"author-name":"Theophylact of Bulgaria","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8989296bafed9104677d7_Theophylact%20of%20Bulgaria.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":11,"exegesis-text":"He instructed them not to enter into every house, warning that mingling with the unworthy could lead to accusations against them, while entering only those of good standing would surely provide for their needs. Whenever you enter a town or city, assess who is deserving of your presence there and remain with them until you leave. Upon entering a house, greet it with a kiss, proclaiming, “Peace be unto this house.” If the home is deserving, your peace will rest upon it; if not, your peace will return to you. Furthermore, if anyone refuses to welcome you or heed your message, as you depart from that house or town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them, signaling your desire for separation. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. The residents of the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah rejected the natural law, which was inscribed by the Creator within human reason and conscience, leading to their dire punishment. Once they identify such a deserving household, they should establish it as a gathering place for worship and remain there for the duration of their time in the area. Should they wander from home to home without purpose, it might convey the impression that they are either frivolous and restless, or egotistical and prideful, desiring to be seen everywhere, or merely seeking the comforts and luxuries of hospitality. When you identify someone worthy, remain in their home and use that place as a base to share your message. The Lord offers grace and peace to those who receive it; however, for those who turn it away, a fate more severe than that which befell Sodom and Gomorrah awaits. While the specific locations where the apostles preached and the duration of their stay are not recorded, it is evident that their time apart was brief. The Savior did not dispatch them all to a single location; rather, He sent them out in pairs, allowing them to minister in six different areas that He Himself had not visited. Not only in Galilee but also in Judea, there were likely few such places left unexplored. It stands to reason that they had a timeline in mind for their return, as evidenced by their simultaneous return; had no such schedule existed, they likely would have returned at staggered intervals."}]}
