Consider the honor bestowed upon the apostles. They are not instructed to communicate trivial matters as Moses and the prophets of old did; rather, they are tasked with proclaiming new and remarkable truths. While those former messengers spoke of earthly realities and material possessions, these apostles declare the message of the kingdom of heaven and all its splendors. Their distinction from the prophets extends beyond this; it lies also in their willingness to obey. Unlike their predecessors who often evaded directives, the apostles embrace their commissions wholeheartedly, confronting dangers, warfare, and grievous trials with a spirit of complete submission as heralds of the kingdom. You might wonder, why be astonished if they complied willingly in their mission devoid of sorrow and suffering? But consider this: are they not faced with significant challenges? Have you not heard of imprisonments, death threats, persecutions by those who claim to be believers, and widespread animosity? All of these trials, as Christ indicated, were swiftly approaching them. He sends them forth as messengers and agents of abundant blessings for others, yet forewarns them of the severe hardships they will encounter."},{"author-name":"Gregory the Great","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88c2b032f5f6e5effaa54_Gregory%20the%20Great.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":6,"exegesis-text":"Beloved brothers and sisters, should the Gospel choose silence, the very world would roar in response. Its desolation serves as a testament to its reality. Reduced to ruins by immense turmoil, it has forfeited its splendor, as if to direct our attention to a greater kingdom that lies ahead. Even those who cherish it find it increasingly bitter. The remnants of its former glory testify that it is not worthy of our affection. Just as a trembling structure poses a risk to its residents, compelling them to escape, those who cling to its facade should hasten to depart as it collapses. Therefore, when the world is in decay and we find ourselves attached to it, we invite destruction upon ourselves rather than linger in its presence. For we, whom love entwines with the worldly passions, remain entangled in its ruins. In this moment, as we witness the inevitable devastation, it becomes essential for us to disentangle our souls from our affection for it. Yet, this task was far more daunting when the messengers were sent forth to declare the hidden kingdom of heaven, while the earthly realms appeared to flourish and grow prosperous before our eyes."},{"author-name":"Euthymios Zigabenos","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":11,"exegesis-text":"The joy of paradise is within reach; it resides in you, if you wish to embrace it. What are we to proclaim? We must cry out to all: ‘Children of the Kingdom, do not abandon the Kingdom for bondage and servitude—yet many are doing just that. Some are ensnared by a false sense of liberty: ‘We reject,’ they declare, ‘the shackles of faith and the oppression of authority, even divine authority; we shall take control of our own destinies.’ Indeed, they have done so, constructing fables that are more naïve than the myths of the Greeks, which they exalt. Others are led astray by the wide path of desires: ‘We do not wish,’ they assert, ‘to heed the clear commandments or the demands of conscience—all of this seems abstract to us; what we seek is a tangible naturalness.’ And they have chosen to follow that way. What has been the outcome? They have become as mindless cattle. Is it not from this moral decay that the theory of human evolution from animals arose? That is the direction they are heading! And everyone is turning away from God, fleeing from Him..."},{"author-name":"Gladkow B.I.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88bf0ceef8c96e09a6521_Gladkow%20B.I..png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"More than a year had passed since Jesus emerged from His retreat in Nazareth to proclaim a new message. Throughout this period, while preaching in Judea and Galilee, He undoubtedly communicated everything necessary for salvation to His listeners. He revealed His all-knowing nature, limitless power, and divine awareness to the people. He demonstrated to His adversaries that He understood their thoughts; He performed miracles solely by His own authority, without seeking assistance from God, accomplishing acts that only God can achieve; ultimately, He publicly declared Himself the Son of God, equal to the Father (John 5:18). In essence, Christ presented to His audience all the essential truths about Himself and substantiated them with miraculous signs, encouraging them to place their faith in Him and regard His teachings as absolute truth. Persuading His listeners of the validity of His message, He clarified that His teachings were not of His own invention but were derived from His Father’s instructions, as mandated by the One who sent Him. Furthermore, He unveiled to humanity the mystery of their existence and articulated the purpose of their lives. However, it was not only the Jews who required this knowledge. The Son of God descended from heaven to bring salvation to all mankind; His message needed to reach every nation on earth, necessitating the selection of messengers who would learn His teachings and, with faith in Him as the Son of God, spread them throughout the world. Thus, it was crucial to choose, prepare, and equip such messengers, ensuring they were worthy of this sacred mission—faithful and resolute in their commitment, embodying in their own lives all that they would share with others. The Lord determined to select and prepare these messengers for the challenging journey ahead. When Jesus Christ commissioned the apostles to spread His message, He anticipated that signs would be sought as evidence of their apostleship. Therefore, He endowed them with authority over unclean spirits, enabling them to cast them out, along with the ability to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and raise the dead."},{"author-name":"Lopuchin A.P.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c891400ee1341634d2276d_Lopuchin%20A.P..png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Prior to their departure, the Savior provided guidelines regarding their behavior and mission during this evangelistic journey.
