However, when a choice must be made between the two, one must cast aside parental honor if it obstructs the duty to please the Lord. God deserves to be worshiped with our utmost devotion, avoiding the error seen in Cain, who offered a less than best gift to God. Similarly, the ancient law prohibited priests from coming into contact with the dead, attending to household affairs, or being swayed by worldly emotions. This law serves as a foreshadowing, while Christ reveals the truth, enabling those who seek to serve God to not allow familial relationships to distract them from His presence. He Himself illustrated this when He disregarded His mother and brothers for the sake of those gathered around Him, asking, \\"Who is My mother? And who are My brothers?\\" and pointing to His disciples, declaring, \\"Here is My mother\\" (Matthew 12:48-49)."},{"author-name":"Euthymios Zigabenos","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":11,"exegesis-text":"The identity of this disciple remains unspecified by the Evangelist; however, he displayed great wisdom. According to Luke, this occurs during Christ’s final journey from Galilee to Judea. It is quite possible that each Evangelist recounts a genuine event from their specified time while also describing a similar case that transpired at another moment. The scribe was turned away, and from this denial, we understand why Jesus did not permit him to accompany Him: the scribe harbored worldly aspirations and Messianic expectations, believing that Jesus would soon proclaim Himself as the Messiah-King in a glorious manner, hoping to secure a prominent position in His kingdom. The scribe's desire was rooted in self-interest, aiming to join Christ's following early on.\\n\\nIn contrast, another individual, not formally a scribe but one of the broader assembly of disciples, received an invitation from the Lord, according to Luke. However, he requested to first return to bury his father. To this, Jesus replied: \\"Leave the dead to bury their own dead.\\" Each person receives a response reflective of their mindset. It is clear that this disciple resembled the third individual referred to by Luke: he was still looking back, hands on the plow, signifying he had not yet fully detached his spirit from earthly distractions for the sake of Jesus. Allowing him to return to bury his father could subject him to influences that were unwelcoming toward Christ, risking his complete loss. Conversely, if he undertakes a significant act of self-denial for Christ right from the start, he will become a steadfast follower of Him."},{"author-name":"Alexander Gorsky","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c8884037c1e1c51e1332e2_Alexander%20Gorsky.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"The individuals chosen for this new fellowship were not to be hindered or limited in their mission.
