Listen, for the distinctions between both can be revealed through what I share. The true messenger of God can be identified by their deeds. Firstly, they exhibit qualities of serenity, humility, and meekness, distancing themselves from the evils and vanities of this present age. They place themselves below others, do not answer inquiries needlessly, and refrain from speaking in private settings; for the Spirit of God does not speak at one’s whim, but rather as it pleases the Lord. When a man filled with the Spirit of God approaches the fellowship of the faithful, their prayers to the Lord take place, and then the angel designated to him, filled with the prophetic spirit, empowers him with the Holy Spirit, allowing him to address the congregation according to God's desire. This exemplifies how the Divine Spirit and His Power are revealed.\\n\\nNow consider the spirit of the worldly, which is vain, irrational, and lacking strength. Initially, the individual who appears to be filled with the Spirit raises himself up, seeks authority, is bold and loquacious, indulges in luxury and pleasures, takes compensation for his insights, and prophesies only for a price. Can the Spirit of God be bought or prophesy for hire? Such behavior does not belong to the true prophet of God, and those who act in this manner are influenced by an earthly spirit. Moreover, they do not join the assembly of the righteous, preferring instead to consort with those who are double-minded and void, prophesying in secret and enticing others with words that tickle their ears, proclaiming folly to the vain: as empty vessels align well with other empty vessels without breaking. When they find themselves among the righteous, filled with the Divine Spirit engaged in prayer, their emptiness becomes apparent; the earthly spirit of fear departs, leaving them utterly defeated and unable to speak. If you store wine or oil alongside an empty container, when you draw from the storehouse, the empty vessel remains empty. Likewise, the empty prophets, when they approach those filled with the Holy Spirit, remain unchanged."},{"author-name":"Jerome of Stridon","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c88dcd3432c6dd41375498_Jerome%20of%20Stridon.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"This concept can also be viewed in connection with those who outwardly profess one thing while demonstrating another through their actions. This understanding is particularly crucial when considering heretics, who, through practices such as self-control, purity, and fasting, seem outwardly adorned in a form of godliness, yet within possess a spirit tainted by malice. Their deceit leads astray the hearts of the more unsuspecting brethren. Consequently, by the detrimental outcomes of their actions, which undermine innocence, they resemble fierce wolves."},{"author-name":"Athanasius the Great","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c889457b66f7fc274d1066_Athanasius%20the%20Great.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"If you can discern the type of trees by the fruit they bear, recognizing their flavor and quality, how much more should you be able to judge the servants of Christ by their actions? Although they may take pride in their reverence, they harbor a wicked spirit. Just as one does not gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles, you should not expect to hear anything good from those who transgress the law, nor anything beneficial from betrayers. Hence, avoid them like the wolves of Arabia, like the thorns of disobedience and unrighteousness, and as barren trees. If you encounter a wise individual, according to the guidance of Wisdom, you should seek him out early in the day and humbly approach his threshold, so that you might glean from him the truths of the Law and the blessings of grace. You may ask, what if they feign righteousness even here? But they can be easily discerned. The path that Christ commands us to follow is inherently difficult and demanding. The hypocrite is not inclined to work; their sole focus is on pretense, making them vulnerable to exposure. When the Lord states, \\"There are few who obtain it,\\" He distinguishes these few from those who merely claim to have it, encouraging us to direct our attention not toward the pretenders but toward those who genuinely walk in the faith. But why, you may wonder, did the Savior not unmask these hypocrites but instead entrusted us with the task of identifying them? This was to keep us vigilant and always alert, protecting ourselves from not only overt foes but also from concealed adversaries, to whom Paul warned that \\"good words deceive the hearts of the unthankful.\\" Therefore, let us not be dismayed when we encounter many of them today; Christ had foretold this. Consider the gentleness of the Savior; He did not command punishment but merely advised us to take care that we are not harmed by them or ensnared through negligence. Furthermore, to counter your claim that recognizing such individuals is impossible, He offers another illustration drawn from nature: \\"Do they gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?\\""},{"author-name":"Basil the Great","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c889927158e4af30595484_Basil%20the%20Great.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":4,"exegesis-text":"We should not allow ourselves to be swayed easily or without discernment by those who present themselves as bearers of truth; rather, we must evaluate each individual based on the qualities outlined in Scripture. Although they may appear concealed, He indicates that they will be revealed with ease. The path I instructed my disciples to follow is challenging and uncomfortable, making it impossible for hypocrites to tread. Just as a good tree is identified not by its blossoms but by its fruit, so too should we discern them not through their words, but through their actions. The Apostle Paul also remarked that they mislead the innocent with flattery and persuasive speech (Romans 16:18). Paul further illustrates this by using an example, making it simpler to identify them. Do they gather grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thorns? When he asks if one would eat from thorns, it is a rhetorical inquiry. Therefore, He asks, “Do men gather grapes from thorns?” etc. It is worth noting that a turnip can also be classified as a thorn."},{"author-name":"Maximos the Greek","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c894f9f2daed618e85a736_Maximos%20the%20Greek.png","category":"Holy Fathers and Teachers","century":16,"exegesis-text":"Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, through His numerous salvific teachings and commandments, guides us who have faith in Him along the path of enduring and unfailing understanding of God. He refers to false prophets as false teachers, or heretics, who speak from a place of earthly wisdom rather than in accordance with the Gospel truth. They mislead the hearts of simple souls with their cunning deceit. Their fruits encompass not only their actions and words but also the corrupt doctrines concealed within the depths of their writings. Do not fall for the deceptive narratives they craft about themselves, nor the accolades and high praises the world bestows upon them. Instead, observe their true fruits. \\n\\nPapism has devised dreadful tortures and cruel executions for humanity. Countless individuals have perished in dank prisons, been burned alive, and suffered various forms of torment. This gruesome, murderous chaos is erroneously labeled as the one true faith, with fervent intensity seeking to pull the entire world into its heretical fold. \\"By their fruits ye shall know them,\\" stated Christ regarding those who teach and the teachings themselves. It is not solely their teachings, which can be challenging for the naive and inexperienced to identify and counter, but rather their lifestyle and actions (see Matthew 24:24; Matthew 12:33) that reveal their true nature. Just as fruit symbolizes human deeds and a growing tree represents an individual or human existence, the evaluation of a tree typically hinges on its fruit rather than its trunk, leaves, or blossoms. While blossoms might be stunning and the leaves plentiful and delicate, they serve merely as embellishments. It is the fruit that determines the worth of a tree or plant: good fruit signifies a healthy tree, whereas bad fruit reveals a flawed one; the fruit of one cannot sprout from a corrupt tree, nor vice versa. For instance, thorns do not produce grapes, nor do burdocks yield figs. In parallel, it is unreasonable to anticipate authentic Christian virtues from a false teacher, even if their actions may seem virtuous. Just as a tree that fails to produce good fruit is destined for the fire, these false teachers are likewise condemned to eternal punishment."},{"author-name":"Abbot Panteleimon about the Trinity","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"Similarly, an individual is not defined by their speech, but rather by their actions, their life and conduct: \\"by their fruits you shall know them!\\" Focus not on their teachings, which can be challenging for the unwise and untrained to discern and counter, but rather on their behavior. Just as the quality of a tree is determined not by its leaves or bark but by the fruit it produces, the nature of the tree is mirrored in its yield. Grapes do not grow on thornbushes, nor do figs emerge from thistles. A genuine minister must embody devotion and moral integrity. A righteous person, drawing from the good treasure in their heart, produces beneficial deeds and words, just as a sound tree yields good fruit. Conversely, an unvirtuous person, out of the evil treasure in their heart, produces wicked actions and harmful speech, regardless of their articulate expressions; an unrighteous tree can only yield bad fruit. These misguided teachers, despite attracting admiration for their writings that reflect earthly wisdom and deceptive philosophies rooted in worldly elements, rather than in Christ, will inevitably face the judgment of the Lord, the ultimate eternal Judge of heaven and earth: every tree not bearing good fruit will be uprooted and cast into the fire. Who would be foolish enough to follow their deceptions and share in their lamentable fate for eternity? Dear holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling! By the ineffable mercy of our Heavenly Father, we are united in the waters of baptism, resembling branches connected to the life-giving vine, which is His only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We can only produce good fruit for salvation when we remain steadfastly connected to Him through the faithful observance of His commandments. Nothing and no one can detach us from this life-giving vine if we cling to it through genuine faith, hope, and love. The trials and tribulations that the Heavenly Father permits us to endure on our journey toward eternal life through the cross are expressions of His loving care, aimed at cleansing our souls from sin: just as a gardener prunes the vineyard to eliminate superfluous growth, encouraging greater yield. With all our faith, hope, love, and heart, let us hold fast to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ until the end of our days, that we may produce the fruit of good works leading to eternal life. Amen."},{"author-name":"Kochomski S.W.","author-image":"https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/6864003fdf3714da6ff0b33a/68c96d263b8c22d9c467bdab_no-pic-theosis.png","category":"Christian Authors","century":19,"exegesis-text":"False teachers can be identified by the results of their actions, that is, by the way they live. In this context, St. Luke affirms (Lk. 6:44) that a good individual draws upon the good stored in their heart to produce positive outcomes, while a wicked person, from the evil within their heart, generates harmful results. Consequently, false teachers should be discerned through their actions: those who cherish the truth within themselves will make wise choices and engage in righteous behaviors, whereas those who harbor falsehood will yield deceitful talk and wrongful acts. The essence of a person's heart is revealed through their words and actions, as they express what overflows from within."}]}
