What is Theosis?
Seraph AITheosis is the divinization of the human person — the central calling and the goal of the Christian life in Orthodox theology. It means that through God's grace, a person can partake of the divine nature without losing their humanity or merging with God's essence.
Scripture speaks of this calling clearly: "that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4). Dionysius the Areopagite explains that every spiritual being who "earnestly seeks a close union with the Divine and persistently strives to attain His illumination" 3 can share in this divinization.
Theodoret of Cyrus illuminates the mystery of the Incarnation: Christ "descended with the spirit and ascended with the physical body" 1. Through this, human nature was exalted in Christ 2 — and through union with Him, we too can share in this exaltation, not by our own strength, but by grace.
Theosis is accomplished through participation in God's uncreated energies, not in His unknowable essence. In practice, divinization is realized through prayer (especially the Jesus Prayer), the sacraments, fasting, and a life in Christ.
